WHAT: The Tina Wang Memorial Journalism Scholarship is intended to identify and recognize outstanding high school seniors who have excelled in the area of journalism at Iowa City West High School. Emphasis for the scholarship is placed on leadership, character, academic and literary achievements.
SCHOLARSHIP PAYMENT: A $600 grant for tuition will be given to one graduating senior every year. Students will be eligible to receive the grant money after showing proof of completion of one semester of undergraduate education at a 4-year university or college. Checks will be made payable to the institution the recipient has designated as his/her choice of school. The winner will be notified in May.
WHO: To be eligible for consideration, an individual must fulfill the following criteria:
Cumulative G.P.A. of 3.50 or higher
Active Staff Membership in West High Journalism for at least 2 full years.
Intention to enroll as a full-time student at any accredited 4-year university or college.
SELECTION: Reference letters, resumes, and personal essays, and a writing sample will be evaluated to determine the candidate’s level of leadership, character, and academic and literary achievement.
REFERENCES: Two letters of reference are required. Letters may come from, but are not limited to: teachers, principals, counselors, community leaders, and employers. Letters should focus on the applicant’s character.
PERSONAL ESSAY: Candidates must attach an essay explaining the importance of journalism to the community and what they have gained from their experiences as part of the West High Journalism Program.
RESUME: A resume is required which highlights their high school career in all academic, community, and extra-curricular pursuits.
HOW TO APPLY: The completed application, personal essay, resume, and reference letters should be mailed or hand delivered to West High School, Tina Wang Memorial Journalism Scholarship, c/o Sara Whittaker, 2901 Melrose Ave, Iowa City, IA 52246. No faxes will be accepted. All materials must be received by May 1.
